What Is the Emotion Code?

The Emotion Code is an energy healing method developed by Dr. Bradley Nelson. Its main objective is to identify and help the body release unprocessed emotional energy. Emotion code practitioners call these trapped emotions—lingering energetic imprints from past experiences.

The Emotion Code technique helps you fully process the trapped emotions that are preventing you from healing or causing your symptoms in the first place. As a certified emotion code practitioner, I use the symptom as a target for finding the root cause. Instead of ignoring the body's communication by masking the symptom, we aim to clear out the underlying cause of concern to provide lasting relief. As an emotion code practitioner who understands what you’re going through, I want to help you build trust in your relationship with your body, so you learn to see each symptom as your body trying to help you, not shut you down. 

It's easy and understandable to feel betrayed by or disconnected from your body when you have painful or limiting symptoms, but it’s actually trying to help. Its main goal is to keep you alive, balanced, and safe (even when it doesn’t feel like it). Because of this, our approach as emotion code practitioners views symptoms as your body's way of raising its hand, trying to get our attention to let us know something isn’t right or there is a need, imbalance, or block.

Renowned trauma researcher Dr. Bessel van der Kolk transformed our understanding of how trauma lives in the body through his groundbreaking work. His research demonstrates that traumatic experiences and overwhelming emotions literally reshape both brain and body, affecting our capacity for joy, connection, self-control, and trust.

Unfortunately, the body remembers what our conscious minds try to forget. When we experience something emotionally overwhelming—whether it's a major trauma or an accumulation of daily stresses—our nervous system can become stuck in survival mode. 

Research from the Centers for Disease Control shows that adverse childhood experiences and unresolved emotional trauma correlate with increased risk for chronic illness, autoimmune conditions, heart disease, and mental health challenges. “Emotional baggage” isn’t just metaphorical—it has real, measurable, heavy effects on our wellbeing.

What Are Trapped Emotions?

Trapped emotions refer to pockets of unprocessed emotional energy that have actually gotten lodged in the body. The body is designed to experience our feelings, good, bad, and the ugly. Because everything is made up of energy (Credit: quantum physics), we know even our emotions have a unique frequency, which travels through the body as we process them. Think, for example, when you or someone you know has a “good cry,” there is a unique crying wavelength traveling through as you feel and experience the emotion. The tears are not all that fun, but once the frequency flows through you and you stop crying, there is a cathartic relief. 

When an emotion is particularly intense, painful, or the body is already under stress, the energetic frequency of each emotion can become stuck on its journey out of the body. It becomes "trapped" in our energetic field. I like to think of it like a tiny pager that is constantly ringing to a unique vibration. If it were stuck inside you, it would get pretty annoying, right? Well, that's happening on an energetic level, interfering with our body's natural balance and energy flow. Over time, these trapped emotions may contribute to discomfort, anxiety, self-doubt, and even chronic physical symptoms like pain and illness or disease. 

How Do Emotions Become Trapped?

In my experience as an emotion code practitioner, I’ve learned that emotions can become trapped:

In Overwhelming Experiences: Too much to process in the moment—an unexpected loss, a frightening event, a moment of deep humiliation—an emotional energy might get "filed away" rather than released, for a later time when the body is more able to do so. 

Through Absorption: Ever feel like you’re taking on the emotions of others? Carrying their burden through feeling what they are? If you've ever walked into a room and immediately felt the tension, or absorbed another’s emotion as if it were your own, you've experienced this phenomenon.

Via Inheritance: Just like we pass down DNA, we can actually pass down and inherit trapped emotions. These inherited emotions might contribute to patterns that run in families without any clear genetic cause.

From Prenatal and Early Life: Even in the womb, you experienced emotion! Both your own and those from close proximity to your mom. 

Recognizing Trapped Emotions in Your Life

You might have trapped emotions if you:

  • Experience physical pain or symptoms without a clear medical cause

  • Feel "stuck" in certain areas of your life despite your best efforts

The human body is incredible—it's wise and always working toward healing and homeostasis. By releasing trapped emotions, we're removing energetic disruptions in your body's natural balance.

How Does the Emotion Code Work?

At first, The Emotion Code might seem a bit out there, but it's actually based on principles from quantum physics and the body's innate wisdom. Here’s an overview of how this process works from an emotion code practitioner's perspective.

Accessing The Body’s Record Through Muscle Testing

Your subconscious mind keeps a record of every experience, every emotion, every moment of your life—even ones you don't consciously remember. This 95% of your mind controls essential functions like your heartbeat, breathing, and immune response. It also knows exactly what emotional baggage is getting in the way of your health and happiness.

The challenge is that your conscious mind—the part that thinks, reasons, and makes decisions—can’t access all this information directly. That's where muscle testing comes in.

Muscle testing, also called applied kinesiology, is a form of biofeedback that allows us to communicate directly with our subconscious. When we ask the body a question, it responds by either strengthening or weakening specific muscles. A strong response indicates "yes" or congruence with truth, while a weak response indicates "no" or incongruence.

Muscle testing is based on the principle that your body's energy responds to stimuli, including thoughts and questions. By stating a true statement or a beneficial concept, your body maintains strength, basically saying, “this thing/idea is good for me”. When we introduce something false or detrimental, your body temporarily weakens. We also use these responses to see if your body agrees or disagrees with certain statements. 

During a session as an emotion code practitioner, I use muscle testing to get responses to yes/no questions: "Is there a trapped emotion causing this concern?", “Is it Anger?”, “Is it Bitterness?” This process allows us to pinpoint exactly what we need to know to clear it. 

Occasionally, we need to gather more information before releasing, other than the emotion itself: What age did this emotion get trapped at? Is it your emotion or is it absorbed from someone else? Do we need to know where it is located in the body? With muscle testing and help from your conscious mind, we gather all the needed information to then release it. 

Releasing with Magnetic Energy

Working Beyond Physical Boundaries

Once we've identified a trapped emotion, we can release it! Releasing is gentle and simple. Your emotion code practitioner will use a neutralizing magnetic frequency, like a magnet, with the intention to release the emotion, and will run it along the governing meridian—an energy pathway that runs from your forehead down your back.

Most people don't feel anything dramatic during the release itself—it's gentle and subtle. I often describe it as little sparks and can even feel like a tap or muscle twitch, if anything. The shifts come in the days and weeks following as your body processes the release and returns to balance.

The Emotion Code works just as effectively remotely as it does in person—yep, you read that right. This might be hard to believe, especially if you're used to conventional medicine treatments, but quantum entanglement shows that energy can be connected across any distance, with changes to one creating corresponding changes in the other. In a similar way, when an emotion code practitioner “tunes” into your energy with your permission, they can identify and release trapped emotions regardless of where you are physically located.

I work with clients all over the country via phone sessions, and the results are just as powerful as in-person work. Distance is no barrier to energy healing.

Clearing Heart-Walls for Deeper Connection

When you’ve been hurt repeatedly—through loss, rejection, betrayal, or heartbreak—your subconscious may “put a wall up” energetically, to protect it from further injury.

This Heart-Wall is ‘built’ entirely of trapped emotions that form a barrier around your heart. It provides short-term protection, but it also blocks your ability to fully experience love, joy, connection, and all the positive emotions we want to have!

Research by Discover Healing suggests that approximately 8 out of 10 people have a Heart-Wall. Feeling like something is holding you back from opening up to others, or you struggling to feel emotions deeply, even when you want to, are signs you might have a Heart-Wall.

The great news is that Heart-Walls can be cleared just like regular trapped emotions. As each emotion is released, the wall breaks down piece by piece. Many clients report feeling like they can finally breathe deeply, genuinely connect with others, and experience joy in ways they haven't felt in years.

What to Expect:
Your Emotion Code Session Experience

I want you to feel totally comfortable and know what to expect when we work together, so let me walk you through the process.

Session Length & Frequency

Emotion Code sessions are 30 minutes. It might seem short, but you’ll be amazed at what we are able to release in that time. 

30-minute sessions set us up for efficiency—your subconscious knows the window of time we have to work and will then show us the most impactful ones to help get you relief quicker. Plus, the body is only able to release so many emotions at one time, so longer appointments aren’t always productive.

How often you schedule sessions depends on your needs and goals. Some clients prefer weekly sessions for a period of intensive work, while others come monthly or every few weeks. We'll find a rhythm that works for you.

During Your Session:
What Happens

All of my sessions as an emotion code practitioner are conducted remotely over the phone. In unique situations, I may work with someone in person or over Zoom.

First Session: Your first session will start off with an explanation about the process and answering any questions you have. I want you to feel informed and empowered. Once you’re comfy and ready to begin, I'll use muscle testing to connect with your energy and start identifying trapped emotions.

Using a chart, we use process of elimination to determine the emotion. You’ll hear questions like  “Is the emotion in column A?”, “Is it in an odd row?”, “It is in row 1?”

Then I'll release the emotion using magnetic energy along the governing meridian. We'll confirm that the emotion has been released and continue until your body signals you’re ready to be done for the day.

Follow-Up Sessions: In the next sessions, we'll begin with updates on how you’ve been feeling since our last session. This is one of my favorite parts—hearing about the shifts you've noticed, the victories you've experienced, or even the processing symptoms you may have encountered. After we celebrate your progress and address any questions, we dive right back into identifying and releasing more trapped emotions.

Before Your Session:
Simple Preparation

There isn’t any required prep before a session, but here's what I recommend:

Hydrate: Drink plenty of water before your session.

Get Comfortable: Find a cozy spot where you can relax. The more relaxed your body feels, the easier the energy work flows. 

Minimize Distractions: While the session itself is gentle and conversational, you'll want to be able to relax and focus on any sensations you might feel during the session.

Come as You Are: My clients usually have an idea of what they would like to work on each session, but if not, your subconscious knows what needs. We can just let that take the lead!

After Your Session:
The Processing Period

At the end of each session, we will test to find your processing time, which will be anywhere from 1-3 days. Your system needs time to adjust now that those old emotional energies are gone. During this time, you may experience:

Feeling Lighter and Relieved: This is the most common response. Many clients report feeling like a weight has been lifted—which makes sense, because it has! You might notice improved mood, easier breathing, or a sense of peace.

Physical Tiredness: It takes energy to process energy! Many clients describe feeling tired in the way you might feel after a good workout—a satisfied, ready-to-rest kind of tired.

Emotional Echoes: About 20% of the time, people experience brief "echoes" of the emotions they released. You might feel a wave of sadness, a moment of anger, or a flutter of anxiety. This is temporary and is actually a sign that the emotion is fully clearing out.

Other Processing Symptoms: Occasionally, people experience other mild symptoms like headaches, dreams, or emotional sensitivity. These are all normal and temporary.

Session Recap: After our session, I'll send you an email recap of everything we worked on. This includes which trapped emotions we released, any additional information that came through about them, and reminders about the processing period.

My Journey from Patient to Practitioner

My path to becoming an Emotion Code practitioner didn't start with a calling or a special interest in energy healing. It started with desperation. 

For years, starting in middle school, I struggled with chronic exhaustion, muscle weakness, brain fog, and dizziness. Since then, I collected diagnoses of POTS, Lyme, and a laundry list of food sensitivities. For over a decade, my diet was severely restricted, and even within those limitations, I struggled with digestive issues, ongoing skin problems, and fatigue. Beyond the physical symptoms, there was the isolation and anger at my body for being like this, and having to miss out on normal life experiences.

Later, my husband began to experience similar health challenges, and we exhausted every conventional medical option trying to address our symptoms. We'd seen specialists, tried countless treatments, followed strict protocols—and nothing brought us the healing we were praying for. We knew there had to be something we were missing. But when I first experienced muscle testing and energy healing, I was skeptical (and honestly a little freaked out). It felt too "woo woo" and just not legitimate. But desperation can be a powerful teacher. We decided to dip our toes in, to try energy healing, and that choice changed everything.

Finding Hope Through Energy Healing

Since working with other energy healers, Belief code, and being our ‘in-house’ emotion code practitioner, both my husband and I have regained a semblance of the lives we had. Regaining energy and mental clarity, endurance, and strength. I’m now able to eat an unlimited diet. I get to choose what I eat, instead of having the menu decided for me. 

More than the physical changes, though, there has been a deeper internal healing. Through this, my body, previously the enemy, has become a friend that looks out for me. Fear and anxiety from previous traumas have lifted, and my nervous system is feeling more at ease after years of hypervigilance. I feel more like myself, more connected to joy and the free-spirited little girl I was when I was healthy last. It wasn't an overnight transformation—healing rarely is—but it was substantial and it was hope. 

Becoming a Certified Emotion Code Practitioner

When I found Discover Healing and Dr. Bradley Nelson's work with the Emotion Code, something clicked. I'd spent years in corporate marketing roles—good jobs that made me feel like a girl boss. But from this experience, I found a passion for this work, and it felt different, like a purpose. I enrolled in the Emotion Code Certification program through Discover Healing. The Emotion Code certification process involved comprehensive video training, practice sessions, clearing trapped emotions, and Heart-Walls for volunteers. Each session reinforced what I already knew from being on the receiving end: this work creates real, tangible change. But more than just learning a technique, I was learning to trust the body's wisdom, to honor the way emotions were meant to be experienced, and to witness the profound relief that comes when we finally release what we've been carrying. This work has given me an appreciation for the way we were created and designed.

My Personal Areas of Specialization

Through my own healing journey, I've unique experience with several specific issues.  Food sensitivities, for example. For over a decade, I couldn't eat gluten, most grains, dairy, corn, or eggs without significant symptoms. Through the Emotion Code, I've been able to reintroduce these foods into my diet without reactions.
